1838: Jozef's witnesses of his birth were two local noblemen,
Woyciech Tarnowski and Adam Lisiecki. Jozef marriage certificate
states that he was 27 years of age at the time of his marriage,
but according to his birth certificate he was 37 years of age.
He must of looked young for his age.
1846: Since childhood he was very active in political groups
1911: Working for the freedom of Poland from Russia and Poland.
His family and neighbors supported him in this work before his
marriage and after his marriage so did his wife. He spent very

The Lignau (Lignal) coat of arms

1852- 1911
land and property owner
|
born: Mar. l4, l852, Chorzele, Russian Poland, Rom Cath; [7]
mar: age 22
died: Feb. 11, 1911, Chorzele, Russian Poland at age 59, starvation; [7]
= Dressel crypt, Chorzele cemetery, Chorzele, Poland
land, property owner, Chorzele, Poland
social activist; disciple of Count Tolstoy
CHRONOLOGY:
Julianna was the daughter Piotr Lignau called Lignal and
his wife Marianna nee Gladys from the clan Nicuja. The Lignau
were an old Roman Catholic noble family of German origin that
emigrated to Mazovia, Poland from "Germany". It is believed
that they came from East Prussia as colonists seeking land.
The Gladys are a Roman Catholic very old noble family of Silesian
(Polish) origin. They immigrated to Mazovia during the 17th
century.
Julianna was a singular personality in her appearance, character
and opinions. She was a disciple of Count Tolstoy in her philosophy
and life style. Whether this was by accident or by education
is not known. She supported her husband in his political activities,
but she was more interested and involved in social problems
in the village. She strongly believed that every one should
work for a living and live from his work. She worked in the
fields with the farm laborers and frequently wore the clothing
of a peasant, which embarrassed the family. She did not think
that Poland offered any future for her sons.
1900: Her sons were apprenticed to businesses she thought
would prepare them for a better life in America. After the tragic
death of her husband and when she thought her sons were ready
old the family farm. The money was divided between her sons
to be used to open small factories in America. She retained
a small house to live in and a good field to grow her food.
1910-11: There was a shortage of food in the Chorzele area
because of bad weather and bad crops. The children of the village
would ask her for food. She was generous. Julianna died at the
age of 59 of starvation. She gave all her food to the children.
The only thing they found in her house to eat was a half a pound
of tea.
1911-1939: For many years after her death the children to
whom she gave food, would place flowers on her grave in the
spring. She left instructions that her tomb stone should give
her first name, the year of her birth, death and the word Laborer
in red letters.
Julianna was over 6 ft. tall; many Dressel girls inherited
their height from her. She was always thin and was not a beautiful
woman. But, "she had a face one never forgot". Julianna distributed
what property she inherited and what possessions she had before
her death, she left no estate.
Jozef Damazy was a short man, and enjoyed dressing well.
In fact he dressed like a banker, even when he worked in his
fields. Jozef Damazy and Julianna made quite an appearance when
together. He short and dressed like a banker, She very tall
and dressed like a peasant. But, from all reports both of them
were completely oblivious to their appearances and had a very
good marriage.
Jozef and Julianna had three children, two boys and one girl.
Two survived to adulthood. see XIX.1-3
Daughter of the noble Peter Lignau (Lignat) called Lignal
and his wife the noble Marianna Lignau called Lignal nee Nieczuja
Gladysz. Juliana was a follower of Count Leo Tolstoy.
The Lignals were the Roman Catholic Mazovian branch of a
noble German family from East Prussia. According to Dr. Grygier,
they were originally called Lignat v. Lemgow.
The Nieczuja Gladysz were the Roman Catholic East Prussian-Mazovian
branch of an ancient noble Polish family from Silesia.
